Birthdays and Bereavement

Grief Support

Video Transcript

We were just goofy high school friends then college roommates. In 1985 Christi and I were run over by a drunk driver in downtown Austin. Tragically, she was dragged 800 feet and did not survive.

About two years after her death, her mom and stepdad, Susan and Don Cox, started a non-profit; then called For the Love of Christi, and now is known as The Christi Center. They provide services to anyone who is grieving, at no cost.

At that time, Christi’s mom told me her biggest fear and on-going sadness was that people would forget Christi.

Susan, I haven’t forgotten her.

Christi was Homecoming Queen and Head Cheerleader at Westlake High School and on the Dean’s List at the University of Texas. It goes without saying she was smart, and well-liked, and silly, and her laugh echoed throughout any room she entered while simultaneously lighting it up.

Today, January 19th, 2024, Christi would have been 59. While Christi is not here to wish a Happy Birthday, I encourage you to reach out to someone who has lost someone they love. Remember their loved one in detail and share your memories. Like Susan, they may fear their loved one being forgotten.

Susan, Happy Birthday to your precious Christi. I haven’t forgotten her.
