The Magic of Hospice

Hospice Care
November 21, 2023

I was recently riding with one of our Liaisons (Hospice Educators) in our East Texas market and she had a profound way of describing the “Magic of Hospice”. This particular liaison has an amazing back story starting her hospice career as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) where she personally cared for dozens, if not hundreds, of patients and families. Later she became the CNA manager organizing and training dozens of CNAs to care for hundreds, if not thousands, of patients. Rarely do you find someone who has more deeply experienced the impact of hospice.

So what does our liaison say is the “Magic of Hospice”? The magic of hospice is that by sharing the burden of care with the hospice team you get to go back to who you really are in relation to the patient. So as the hospice team starts providing nursing care, aide care, spiritual care and emotional support the family gets to go back to being a son or daughter, husband or wife, or whatever role they were to the patient prior to becoming the patient’s caregiver.

How powerful and how precious to spend the last days, weeks or months with your loved one as your authentic self. What a gift hospice has to offer in providing the space for a patient and their family to be true to the relationship that brought them together. For a wife to be a wife. For a husband to be a husband. For a daughter to be a daughter. This is truly the “Magic of Hospice”.
