An Adult Child’s Journey with Hospice

You are not alone (A well spent 15 minutes)

I’ve been leading teams of caring professionals for fifteen years, yet I had never used the services of the companies I ran. One day I asked myself, do you even know what a product is if you’ve never used it?  Well in 2024, my dad was in decline at an assisted living community when the director of nursing suggested my dad and my family would benefit from hospice. I like to call it the last great gift my father shared with me, which is getting a first hand experience of what it was like to be under the care of the hospice company I led.

After my father passed away, I reflected on the decade plus long journey of an adult child caring for their aging parent.  In hopes that the decisions made on our journey might help another family we had the video A Son’s Journey created. It’s my great hope that you would take 15 minutes to watch the video as I truly believe it will help you and all those who are going through the journey of caring for an aging parent to realize “You are not alone”.

In the video, the journey takes you through

  1. Out of town parents struggling to be safe, clean and cared for
  2. Decline managed with the support of a hired caregiver
  3. The decision for assisted living
  4. Further signs of decline
  5. The “talk” and having a plan
  6. What I didn’t know but learned about hospice

If you take anything away, please know that “you are not alone”. There are caring professionals all along the journey.  From homecare providers to assisted living to nursing home and hospice, we all align to support families caring for aging loved ones. If you are reading this and are a caring professional, allow me to personally “thank you” for all you do for the people/patients/residents and families you serve. Your service changes the world and by teaming up with other like minded caring professionals we can provide a more seamless care experience that truly makes an impact in the world.
